GPS on the car is not user friendly for English user. Hokkaido has good onsens, but, not all public. It was a surprise that the Shiretoko national park 5 lake trail walk must be guided by ranger for a few of around US$50. We spent 11 days in Hokkaido. Drove around the island. But, the Hokkaido scenic was not as great as we expected. Sushi and shasime are good and cheap at Hokkaido. Crabs are expensive.

New Chitose/Sapporo airport is our absolute favourite of all airports we've travelled through. The wide variety of restaurants (and there are many to choose from) on the 3rd floor of the domestic offer excellent dining at very reasonable prices. An absolute recommendation is the kaiten sushi (conveyor belt sushi) "Nemuro Hanamaru", which offers top quality sushi and related food items with a great atmosphere. To make the visit truly awesome, I would recommend learning a few sushi dish names in Japanese and order directly from the sushi chefs in front of you. Some of my favourites: "O Toro", "Chu Toro", "Ankimo", "Uni", "Hamachi", "Kampachi", "Kazuo, "Aburi Yaki Salmon", "Kani Miso", "Kazunoko" and "Botan Ebi" to name a few. Just say the item and hold of your fingers for how many you want, or even learn the words for numbering your order (my home-made phonetics): one - "hitotzu", two - "futatsu", three - "meetzu", four - "yotzu". Once leaving New Chitose, one of our favourites are the National Park up in the mountains east of Kamifurano, where there are many fabulous onsen (hot springs).
